A girl who is suffering from writer’s block and is trying to eradicate it with a therapy

You cannot generate words if you don’t consume them. You cannot become a great writer if you don’t read often.

For months I struggled back and forth with writer’s block. I would sit in front of my computer screen staring at the blank canvas. Within, I had so much to say but sadly, I didn’t know-how.

I was scared. What if people don’t like my writing. What if I say something wrong. What if they find me boring. What if… what if… What if writing isn’t just for me.

The worst thing is for an artist to battle with the fear of expression. Without expression, the universe in my head loses all its beauty and meaning. The definition of who I am becomes far and vague.

One day, while taking a shower, I realized three things. (Oh yes, I discover the most beautiful things in the bathroom). I discovered that;

1. You cannot grow a seed you never planted.

You cannot generate words if you don’t consume them. You cannot become a great writer if you don’t read often. So I reformed my strategy for reading (which could be another post if you’d love to see it), sat my ass down, and started building the habit.

Gradually, Gradually, I noticed the ease at which words gushed through my vocabulary veins. My paucity of words faded away. So if you ever feel like you can’t write, try reading a book you find very interesting.

2. If you are hungry, eat!

Eat those words in multiple forms. Listening is perhaps one of the most important skills for effective communication. Listen to audios, podcasts, lyrics, Youtube videos, Tedtalks, seminars, conversations, just listen.

Allow words to flow into you from your ears and then travel to your subconscious mind. Pay attention and capture the meaning that every syllable silently echos.

3. The fear would never go away, so just do it.

African girl writing as therapy to eradicate writer’s block

Every writer experiences writer’s block once in a while. Our bodies get sick, Our mind gets weary. It is the circle of life. Your first draft doesn’t have to look like heaven. Your first piece doesn’t have to be perfect. The aim of writing is to express and inspire, not to hit perfection.

So just write. Use your keyboards, use your pen, use your screen, just write. Write like you are talking to the being inside your soul. Write like you have no fears. Write because your story is a universe and you can paint the sky with all the colors of the rainbow.

Have you experienced writer’s block before? (I will respond on your behalf, YES)

How did you overcome it?
